In 1986 Margaret Geller and her colleagues made a map of 1,000 nearby galaxies . Geller called the image the "stick-man" because it look like a stick figure with arms outspread . More important the stick-man shows the galaxies are grouped together into sheet , or bubbles , rather than spread evenly through the universe . The blue dots are spiral galaxies like our own and the red dots are elliptical ones .

Stars ( and the planet around them ) collect into galaxy , which are the basic building blocks of the universe . Galaxies contain billions of stars . The milky way , is home to our star , the sun

Cluster may hold up to several thousand galaxies . Our galaxy , the milky way , is part of a rather small cluster called the Local group . It is home to about 30 galaxies .
